Rope drop refers to arriving at park opening. Anyone with valid park admission can do this. However, Early Theme Park Entry is a perk exclusive to Disney World resort hotel guests. This benefit allows you to enter any of the four theme parks 30 minutes before official opening any day of the week.

How Early Entry Works at EPCOT

Early Entry guests are permitted into the park 30 minutes before regular day guests. So, if EPCOT opens at 9AM, Disney World resort guests can enter and start riding attractions as early as 8:30AM. Just follow the Early Entry signs by the park entrance and have your MagicBand or park ticket out for Cast Members to scan and verify your hotel reservation.

If you do purchase Lightning Lane Passes to skip the line at select rides in EPCOT, you’ll want to prioritize the rides that you don’t have a Lightning Lane return time for. So, for example, if you buy a Lightning Lane Single Pass for Guardians of the Galaxy at 2PM, don’t waste your precious rope drop time on that ride! Instead, head to another ride instead.

Purchasing Lightning Lanes is a surefire way to be able to experience the most attractions during your time at EPCOT, with rope drop enhancing that! However, it is totally doable to knock out EPCOT’s most popular attractions without paying extra money for Lightning Lanes during a rope drop!

Learn from our mistakes! These errors can derail an otherwise solid EPCOT rope drop plan.

Mistake #1: Arriving Too Late

The entire point of rope drop is to arrive at/before park opening to secure low wait times. Showing up to the park even 20 minutes after opening defeats the purpose of getting out of bed early to rope drop. You’ll face the same long lines as everyone else. Instead, arrive at EPCOT 45-60 minutes before the park opening time. Get through security early and position yourself near the ropes with time to spare.

Mistake #2: Stopping at Spaceship Earth First

It may seem enticing to hop on the first ride you see at rope drop, but that would be a mistake! Spaceship Earth is well-positioned if you’re entering at the front of the park, but it doesn’t traditionally have a long wait throughout the day (in fact, it’s usually longest in the morning).

So walk right past Spaceship Earth at rope drop and come back later in the morning or afternoon. Wait times rarely exceed 15-20 minutes after the initial rush.

Mistake #3: Not Having a Clear Plan

If you don’t have a plan for rope dropping, you’ll be missing out on precious time. Standing around on the side of the walkway, checking your app, and discussing with your group what ride to go to next will waste way too many precious minutes.

Finalize your plan the night before and ensure everyone in your group knows the route. It’s even worth having a backup plan in case your first choice has unexpected issues.

Entering through International Gateway but targeting a ride on Guardians first? You’ll cross nearly the entire park while other guests reach it faster from the main entrance. Match your route to your entrance. International Gateway works best for Remy’s first, while the main entrance works best for Guardians or Test Track first.

For First-Time Visitors

Research is important for first-time visitors to do in advance, especially at EPCOT. The park spans 305 acres, making it one of the largest in Disney World. After years of visiting, I’ve found that the best plan is to knock out the attractions, then take everything World Discovery, World Celebration, and the World Showcase have to offer at a slower pace throughout the day.

That’s why rope drop is an excellent option for this park! Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes, pack some snacks, and stay hydrated.
