While a hurricane can happen at any point during hurricane season, there are some months when your chances of facing severe weather are higher than others. You’ll find the highest chance of storms in the late summer and early fall, especially in August, September, and October.

If you’re planning a trip during this window, you should be aware that heavy rain and tropical storms are possible, and there’s a possibility that they will form into full hurricanes that could even pass directly over Disney World. This isn’t common, but it can happen.

The official hurricane season dates stay the same each year and are recognized by local weather agencies. Also, keep in mind that daily weather at Disney World can be unpredictable during these months, so you may experience rain even if no hurricane is present.

How Long Should Your Vacation Be During Hurricane Season at Disney World?

When planning a Disney World trip during hurricane season (June through November), flexibility is the name of the game. While weather agencies usually start tracking storm systems that could turn into severe storms or hurricanes weeks out, the path and severity of a storm aren’t usually determined until a few days, or even hours, out.

While we don’t recommend completely avoiding traveling during hurricane season at Disney World (it’s one of the best times to visit, after all!), we do recommend planning your travel dates with possible weather disturbances in mind. For example, while we usually say that you can do Disney in a four or five-day trip, we often like to plan stays that are a bit longer (4-7 days) during hurricane season to have built-in buffer days.

We find that shorter stays (3–4 days) help you avoid extended exposure to storm risks, but may limit your ability to see every park. Whereas longer stays (5–7 days) give you more chances to enjoy the parks if bad weather causes temporary closures or changes in your plans.

However, if you know in advance that a hurricane will likely impact Central Florida during your stay, it’s best to take advantage of Disney’s change/cancelation policy and avoid traveling during the severe weather. It’s safest to avoid being in the storm, even if you’ve taken all the safety precautions and don’t mind riding out the storm at your hotel!

Best Hurricane Season Hotels at Disney World

The most important thing about visiting during hurricane season at Disney World is to choose your hotel wisely. Many of Disney’s resorts have multiple buildings that require you to walk outside to other buildings to access amenities. However, when severe weather hits, these are the worst places to be. Instead, you’ll want a hotel where you can easily access dining, recreation, and your room without venturing outside.

This is why deluxe resorts with interior hallways are ideal. While they are more expensive, these hotels keep most amenities, restaurants, and common areas indoors, reducing your need to leave the room in severe weather. When a hurricane hits, it can often mean hours and hours of bad weather that you can’t walk outside in, so you don’t want to be stuck in a hotel room with no access to food or entertainment!

Many feature multiple dining options and large lobbies or lounges where you can wait out the storm and participate in Cast Member-led activities. So, consider splurging on these hotels if you’re visiting during hurricane season. It’s worth it, trust us!

Packing For Hurricane Season at Disney World

Packing right for a Disney World trip is always important, but it’s even more important when you could face severe weather during your stay. If a hurricane is coming your way (or even just hitting somewhere in the state), you’re in for a rainy trip. But with the right items, a little water won’t get in the way of all your fun!

When packing, choose lightweight, quick-drying clothing and pack extra outfits in case you get wet. Good shoes that dry quickly or extra pairs of shoes and socks are also key to a happy, less soggy vacation.

  • Compact umbrella
  • Disposable or reusable ponchos
  • Waterproof bags or pouches for electronics
  • Spare shoes or sandals
  • Extra socks
  • Portable phone charger (preferably wireless and long-lasting)
  • Small first aid kit

Ponchos are especially useful on days when it’s safe to be outside but still rainy, and they’re far cheaper if you buy them before your trip. A waterproof phone pouch can also protect your device during downpours or flooding when you need to get from one building to another at your resort or in the parks.

We also like to bring a small backpack or tote to keep wet and dry items separated in our suitcase. And your phone becomes your most important accessory during severe weather – be sure to have extra chargers that work even if the power goes out (which is rare, but can happen).

What Happens When There Is a Hurricane at Disney World?

So, there’s a hurricane hitting during your Disney World vacation. What now?

If a hurricane warning is issued within seven days of your arrival at Disney World, you can usually reschedule or cancel your vacation package without penalty. But more on that later.

If you are already at Disney World (or just decide to head there anyway), you should expect the theme parks to close temporarily if it is deemed necessary for your safety. They won’t always close when the weather is bad, but Disney officials are experts on monitoring these storms and will always make the call that prioritizes your safety and well-being.

If the parks or select attractions close, Disney will notify you in advance and provide guidance on what to expect. For example, you may be required to stay inside your resort room once the hurricane is over the area. However, before conditions worsen, you are typically free to move around your hotel to get food, participate in activities, relax, and stay busy.

Each hotel has a staff of Cast Members who are there to ride out the storm with you, and they work hard to make sure you’re not bored while the parks are closed! You’ll often be able to watch Disney movies for free, play games in the lobby, do crafts, and more. The staff also provides regular updates and will help you relocate to a safer part of the resort if needed.

Keep in mind that the hotel restaurants and shops may operate on limited hours, but all essentials will remain available throughout your stay, even during the storm.

So, while it might not be the ideal Disney vacation that you imagined, you’ll still be immersed in the Disney magic. Just remember to be flexible, listen to directions, and stay safe!

Disney World’s Hurricane Cancellation and Refund Policies

Disney’s hurricane policy is one of the most flexible among theme parks in Central Florida, so you don’t have to risk your safety just because you’ve already paid for the trip! However, be aware that the National Weather Service must issue a hurricane warning in Orlando or your area of residence before you can use the cancellation policy.

5 Essential Tips For Surviving Hurricane Season at Disney World

So, you know what to expect when you’re visiting during hurricane season, what Disney’s cancellation policy is like, and how to pack, but what else do you need to know? I’ve lived in Central Florida for ten years now (long enough to see many hurricanes roll through the state). Here are five essential tips for surviving hurricane season at Disney World!

Book Directly Through Disney

Booking your hotel stay and theme park tickets directly with Disney is a must when you’re visiting anytime between June to November because it gives you added security if severe weather impacts your plans. You’ll only be able to take advantage of Disney’s generous hurricane cancellation policy if you do this!

When you book with third-party vendors or travel sites, you may not have the same flexibility. Oftentimes, you’ll face stricter or less accommodating change and cancellation policies from them, which could result in you losing a lot of money or deciding to travel when it’s not safe.

Additionally, booking directly through Disney makes it easier to communicate with Disney’s guest services. You’ll receive official updates quickly, know exactly who to call if you have issues, and may have access to special rebooking options.

Purchase Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is especially important during hurricane season in Florida, because it gives you some guarantee that the costs outside of your Disney hotel stay and park tickets can be recouped. There are often specific travel insurance policies for hurricane season, and having one can really help you when you’re in a pinch.

We recommend looking for plans that cover interruptions, cancellations, and delays due to natural disasters. Hurricane-specific coverage will ensure you can claim expenses if the area is under an official warning, even if you haven’t arrived yet.

It’s also important to have the My Disney Experience app downloaded and up to date on your phone, as this is how Disney will communicate any closures or weather updates that you need to know.

Have Flexible Travel Dates

Building flexibility into your travel schedule gives you more options if a hurricane threatens to hit when you’re visiting. If your dates aren’t locked in, you can shift your reservation forward or back.

We recommend adding buffer days before and after your planned park visits to make it easier if you need to rearrange your park days or lengthen your stay if flights are canceled or delayed due to storms. While the likelihood that you’ll actually be traveling during a storm is small, it’s best to be prepared and in that mindset just in case!

Budget For Contingencies

Extra nights, last-minute flight changes, and feeding a family when you’re riding out a storm can add up! It’s best to budget in a bit of a buffer for any unexpected costs so that you’re not surprised (or already out of money!). We typically find that planning for an extra $500-$1,000, depending on the size of your family and where you’re staying/traveling from, is best.

Having this financial buffer means you won’t be surprised if plans change. It lowers stress and ensures you can make necessary arrangements, even on short notice.
